  14. REGISTERING ROUTER AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
  15. ====================================================
  16. Router is not free. Sites using this software MUST register it,
  17. one copy per person. Contact the author for site licensing information.
  18. Or you can consider the following.
  19.  
  20. 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
  21. I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
  22. I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
  23. register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
  24. an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
  25. deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
  26. like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.

  29. on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should also accompany this file.

  32. USING ROUTER
  33. =============
  34. •  If you use Router, please please please send me a note. My addresses
  35.     (post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
  36.     information in the above section on registration.

  38. What Does Router Do?
  39. --------------------
  40. •  Drop files into this program and re-route them to other locations. For
  41.     example, drop a text file in and move it to a Text Files folder. Or drop a
  42.     Word document into a Word docs folder. Or a folder or disk containing
  43.     text files, Word files, and PICT files, and move them to their own separate
  44.     directories on Router’s disk.
  45.  
  46. •  Read further if you plan to use Router with aliases.
  47.  
  48. Using Router
  49. ------------
  50. •  Drag sets of files, folders, or disks into the application, “Drop Box-
  51.     style”. Router will scan folders and disks provided depending on your
  52.     preferences, and will move (if preferences allow, of course) each of
  53.     the selected items to a directory you have set. Drop Boxes require Apple
  54.     Events, and thus System 7.0 or higher.
  55.  
  56. •  Double-click on Router to modify the preferences and links, and to see the
  57.     about box information.
  58.  
  59. •  If you drag an alias directly into Router, its target (parent) will be moved
  60.     (not the alias). If the alias was inside a folder you dropped in, then it
  61.     will be moved (not the target).
  62.  
  63. •  Router will not move (copy) items from one disk to another. Just between
  64.     directories on the same disk.
  65.  
  66. •  To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Files already processed
  67.     will remain modified.
  68.  
  69. Preferences
  70. -----------
  71. •  The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the preferences
  72.     dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct parameters have been
  73.     set up. You can modify these if you wish. If you don't want to see that
  74.     window again, just say OK. You will have to explicitly ask for for the
  75.     Preferences window the next time you wish to change anything.
  76.  
  77. •  The Links window will not come up automatically.  Make sure you press
  78.     the Links... button to set up the item to folder links.
  79.  
  80. •  The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can choose to show an
  81.     alert before modifying anything. By choosing to modify directories, you
  82.     have decided that folders themselves can be modified. You can modify files
  83.     and folders inside those folders which you have dropped in by checking the
  84.     Modify contents box. For example, if you drop in a folder containing three files
  85.     and another folder, and have Modify contents on but Modify directories off, the
  86.     folders’ names will remain unchanged, but the names of all contained files
  87.     (including those inside the second folder) will be modified according to your
  88.     extensions.

  90. •  NOTE: If you turn on Move contents, contained folders AND items will each
  91.     go their separate ways. This can really mess you up if you don’t know this
  92.     will happen. Files always move with the directories that contain them,
  93.     so if you just want to move Folder A to Folder B, along with everything
  94.     inside it, turn Move contents off!!!
  95.  
  96. •  To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
  97.     option key while the program is launching.
  98.  
  99. •  To bypass the “check” alert that appears before anything is modified, hold
  100.     down the shift key while the program is launching, or after you hit OK to
  101.     hide the Preferences dialog.
  102.  
  103. Links
  104. -----
  105. •  Use the links dialog to set up item to directory links. The buttons are
  106.     fairly self-explanatory.
  107.  
  108. •  If an item matches more than one entry than another, and matches
  109.     all criteria in that entry, the item will be moved to the most specific
  110.     folder (so an item matching the ‘TEXT’ criteria would be moved to
  111.     the folder with ‘TEXT’ ‘ttxt’ rather than that with just ‘TEXT’). If it
  112.     matches the same number of criteria, it is moved to the first match
  113.     in the list.

  115. •  If an item does not match any of your criteria, it is not moved.
  116.  
  117. •  The ? wild card is allowed in the name extension, but not in the type
  118.     or creator. It represents only one character. So ‘TE?T’ is the same as
  119.     ‘TEXT’ or ‘TEMT’.
  120.  
  121. •  Make sure you select the correct folder and disk for your items. Remember
  122.     that items are not copied by Router onto other disks. Just moved into
  123.     directories on the same disk.
  124.  
  125. USING DROP BOXES
  126. =================
  127. Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
  128. of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
  129. icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
  130. The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
  131. You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
  132. just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
  133. combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
  134. files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
  135. directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
  136. directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
  137. and thus their target (parent) is modified.
